Evaluation of animation (Wednesday 25th November)

Animation Evaluation

Personal:

I personally thought my animation was professional, good and entertaining. Although I did have a few technical problems I think it went well.

Other Classmates:

I believe that all of them were good although it was quite apparent who had put the time and effort in.

Wednesday 4th November

Made it in today :) Although a bit tired now :(

Made it into college today, which was a good thing really as I met up with Richie who informed me we were going on a trip. He had received an email that it looks like no one else got to let us know to turn up early. Gradually people turned up and were told. In the email it said that we were all to meet up by 8.45 to have the register taken and to get on the bus that would take us to Glenrothes. It came to 9am and no one came, so we asked a passing member of staff what was happening. They said that the substitute tutor wasn't in today so we would have to "look after ourselves and behave", which was useful. We got on the bus and we went to a theatre in Glenrothes where we saw a production of "Stay Safe" which was generally watching clips from a presentation on a road traffic accident and the gradual stages of what happened next, during the intervals there was a member of an emergency service - paramedic, fireman etc, who gave a speech on what happened and in one case - the triage nurse - actually partially demonstrated how to insert a tube into a chest cavity when your lung has collapsed, as this is what had happened to one of the characters in the presentation. After this another speaker came on the stage, he was a father of a crash victim, the victim being his son, and he described the dreadful day of when his son was involved in a car accident, when he had finished his speech he called his son out onto the stage, the son, who is now in an automatic wheelchair due to being paralised, and is also unable to talk, came out and using a machine which allows him to communicate, told us about the accident and advised us that it isn't cool to show off in a car and to always wear a seatbelt. He also spoke about what his life was like before and after the accident, he spoke of playing football, enojoyed skiing holidays with his parents, but now everything has to be done for him as he now unable to do these things due to the accident.
When the show had finished we grouped up together to make sure we were all accounted for and got on the coach back to college. To make sure that tutors/student payroll knew we were here we all wrote our names and numbers on a piece of paper and handed it to a tutor in Media Space.

Monday 5th October

Today in Creative Digital Media we were playing with finger puppets against a blue background, I had the little mouse, it's so cute. We then searched the internet for background pictures from around the world to replace the blue screen. It is work in process and will be on here shortly, maybe I will even come up with a name for the mouse :D

Friday 25th September

The above is what we did in creative digital media today, it is basically an overview of everything we have done for this part of the course. Next stop Skibo.

The career I would like to do

Project Title: Outcome 3 – PC (a)
Candidate Name: Rae Clarke
Class: DMC 1

Job Title Chosen: Animator

Why did you choose this job:
I choose this job as I would love to create a character or background for a film or game that everyone will see. Also it would be pretty awesome to see it on the big screen and say “I did that”. I really enjoy drawing up characters for people, I do regular drawings for a friend who does a newsletter and he is always impressed with the results, so I feel that with the right training and courses that I will be able to make a career out of it.

What makes you think you could do this job:
I think I can do this job as I am very imaginative, creative and artistic. I am always drawing up new characters, or modifying old ones. I have reasonable knowledge of working on computers, but there is always room for improvement. I am currently doing a qualification in Digital Media Creation, and I am really enjoying it. So hopefully if I get my head down and work hard, I will get onto the higher levels, so I can be a great animator.

Job Skills, attributes and relevancy
Knowledge of 2D/3D Animation Equipment - Quite relevant depending on what type of animation you’re making.
IT Skills - Highly relevant, needed for all animation
Using PC software – flash, maya, lightwave etc - Highly relevant, needed to create an animation
Drawing, sculptor - Not very relevant, only needed if you plan to make stop motion video’s out of pictures etc.
Teamwork - Highly relevant, as you will (more then likely) be working with other people/colleagues on movies/projects.
Patience - Highly relevant, patience is a virtue, frustration can affect the production and can be very costly
People skills - Highly relevant since you will be communicating with clients/colleagues.
Design Skills - Highly relevant, considering you may be needed to help create the animation backdrop
Creativity - Quite relevant, as you may need to come up with idea’s for a movie
Attention to detail - Quite relevant as if you don’t pay attention in a briefing then you will have no idea what you are doing and that can be costly
Communication Skills - Quite relevant as you will be talking to clients/colleagues/bosses.
Organisation Skills - Quite relevant as you will need to keep neat and tidy so you know where everything is and it looks professional
GCSE’s - Highly relevant, these are needed for you to get the qualifications that are needed to be an animator, without them it wouldn’t happen
NC/HNC/HND/Degree/Masters Degree - Eventually needed to be able to create more advanced animations, work better/faster and have more knowledge and understanding of the job in hand.

Wednesday 23rd September

The above is one of things we did in Creative Digital Media today, we also went over the stuff that was done on Monday which was good because I wasn't here on monday, so I will have a play around and see what I can come up with.
We also played a few games today, which involved beanbags and getting know stuff about other people in the group. It was ok, although I think I know a few more names now.

Thursday 17 September 2009

Wednesday 16th September

Creative Digital Media today. We started off by starting another assessment, we discussed the information we needed to find out about, subjects were different types of jobs in a particular career and what each one did. We then broke this information down into 3 seperate group labelled - pre-production, production and evaluation/testing. When we had collected all the information we put them into tables/diagrams which are below to show the information we had gathered.
We then did some creative work on dreamweaver till the end of the lesson.

Monday 14 September 2009

Monday 14th September

Beginning of the week again.

Has been a bit of a hectic day today, started of with career guidance, where we spoke about employment, and what abilities we had and if the abilities and qualities we have would impress our future employers.

Next we had numeracy where we continued on with the booklets. Just finished one with line, pie and bar charts in it, boy was that fun :)

Then we had Hardware, where we had our first assessment for the lesson. I tried my hardest but unfortunately didn't pass it. However I do get one more try at it, I just hope that i'm ready for it then. Although I have to admit I was a bit gutted at not passing, especially as I seem to be ok in the other subjects, just don't want this to get me down to much.

Lastly we had Creative Digital Media, where we started our second assessment for this subject. The main mission for these were to pick three likely jobs we would like to do when we finish college, find out more information on them, like day to day activities for a graphic designer, and put them all in a presentation form and post them on here.

I also got my own fish, haven't came up with names yet, but watch this space :)

Saturday 12th September 02:32am

Yes I know it's early, but I noticed that we had Windows Movie Maker on our computer at home and thought I would give it another go, I even got to change the music too (thumbs up). Right now I'm off to bed, night!!!!!

Friday 11th September

Bubbl.us graph of "Hardware and Software"

Today being the longest day of the week but that aside it wasn't to bad.

First port of call was Creative Digital Media, where we were going to have a speaker come in and tell us about their work. Unfortunately they couldn't make it today but on the plus side they will be visiting us next week so it gives us time to sort questions out.

So we cracked on with the lesson, we started off doing the above bubbl.us graph on "hardware and software"(above). It basically shows the hardware and software available to us in Digital Media. After break, Gillian showed us Windows Movie Maker and demonstrated how it worked and how to use it. Copying files off the computer, Gillian managed to put a short film together with background music, title and credits. We were then set loose to give it a go ourselves. I copied over some photos of myself, my family and my hobbies onto the computer and used them to make a film. Unfortunately I had to stick with the music from the computer and not my own due to the computer not liking the format my music was in.

After lunch, we had Computer Hardware and Systems, where I was given a Student Learning Pack for the subject. The subjects covered are:

  • Binary to Decimal
  • Types of Software
  • Investigate OS & PC specifications
  • Formatting and Partitioning
  • Install Operating System
  • Install Utility Software
  • Install Application Software
  • Install Motherboard, Hard Drive, CD ROM, Memory, Graphics card
  • Install Printer & Flash Drive
  • Investigate BIOS beep codes
  • Draw fault finding flow chart
  • Diagnose 2 faults.

We then went over some of them, and at the end of each section there were questions on what we had just read, with four answers to choose from. It was really interesting how much I learned and how well I answered the questions, admittedly I did get some wrong, but thats how you learn.

At the end of the lesson, our tutor gave us some files to take away with us to read, and told us that the information that was in the student pack and in these files would help us to pass our assessment, which is coming up on Monday.

Thursday 10 September 2009

Thursday 10th September

In PC Passport today I completed a few multiple choice quizzes online, after this I did my first assessment for this subject and I passed. The subjects the questions were on were all the things we had covered in the lessons, e.g LAN, networks, kb's, mb's etc so I was prepared, but I am happy I passed. When this was done, we were told to entertain ourselves till everyone else has caught up, so I continued with the assessment for Creative Digital Media.

After lunch we had Web Design Fundamentals. The lesson was really a going over what we had done in previous lessons, to make sure we remembered and to help those who needed a little help. But there were some new things in there as well, e.g putting borders round the edges of the text boxes etc. But it was what I needed, just to refresh the subject in my head.

Wednesday 9th September

CATCH UP DAY!!!!!

As they say, "exactly what is says on the tin". Catch Up Day. Which really ment to update the diary on hear (what im typing now) and start on the assessment of research and show findings on 3 companies in the digital media realm.

Ive decided to research:

  • Pixar

  • Rockstar

  • Facebook

I'm going to be showing my findings in a powerpoint presentation and will be on here shortly... (Watch this space)

Monday 7th September

The one and only lesson I could attend today was Numeracy which I think I did well at. I completed my first assessment and passed it, which I am thrilled about. I then continued on with the next sections of the booklets.

Sorry there is no more, I was a very poorly girlee.

Thursday 3rd September

Learned quite a bit today, although i'm not saying we don't learn alot everyday ..... i'm just going to stop there I think.

PC Passport was the first lesson of the day and what we did was research the following:
  • Internet

  • Modem

  • Dial up connection

  • ISDN - Intergrated Services Digital Network

  • ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (Getting good at this)

  • Broadband

  • ISP - Internet Service Provider

  • Web Browser

  • URL - Uniform Resource Locator, previously Universal Resource Locator

  • Bandwidth

  • Firewall

  • Antivirus Software

  • Cookies (not the lovely sweet kind)

  • Intranet

  • www - World Wide Web

  • FTP - File Transfer Protocol

Then after lunch we had Web Design Fundamentals, where we discussed about different websites currently on the web. Then we split ourselves into groups and chose a website that we frequently used and come up with 5 advantages and disadvantages. Paul and I chose youtube.com and these are the results:

Good

  1. Like the layout, very easy to find vids.

  2. Simple and easy to use
  3. Gets people to share and experiment

  4. Good to use when you're bored

  5. Achmed the dead terrorist

Bad

  1. Takes ages to load vids

  2. Pictures aren't always clear

  3. General colour scheme is a bit dull

  4. You get the odd load of rubbish

  5. (Please write your answers on a postcard if you can think of a 5th)

After that we learned how to do our webpages, which I found really interesting, and was quite impressed on how letters and numbers can make up a brightly colur webpage.

Wednesday 2nd September

Its Creative Digital Media Time!!!!! (Forget Chico Time)(Oh and that was in a sing song tone :))

(Clears throat) Anyway yes CDM, we started on animation today. Made shapes on one side of the page and made them move to the other side, was totally cool. We then learned how to write our names, yes this may sound wierd but let me explain, we typed out our name on the computer and then with the rubber tool we slowly rubbed out the name, pressing F6 to save that particular part, then when you have totally rubbed it out, let the adobeflash do its magic and it looks like it's writing your name.

Thursday 27th August.

Day started off with PC Passport, which was interesting. As it was our first PC Passport lesson we had discussions about what we would learn and do, along with general research on things like modems, braodband, anti virus software and general computer stuff, we would have assessments which would see if we are the true spongies we should be. We also designed a front cover for our portfolio and I made up another south park character and used that. ( I'm going south park mad aaggghhhhh).

Then we had lovely lunch time yummy!!!!!!

After that we had Web Design Fundamentals with Graeme, where we were given a quiz to see how much information we had in our heads about web design. My result was 5/10, but according to Graeme we should get 10/10 or near enough at the end of the course.

Wednesday 9 September 2009

Wednesday 26th August

WEDNESDAY 26TH AUGUST.
Creative Digital Media

Started off the lesson with creating accounts on blogger for our daily diary writing and bubbl.us for mindmapping. We then created a mind map to look at and show the different jobs there are in digital media. (Above).
We then discussed the sectors that are in the digital media industry - Corporate, Education, Commercial, Radio, Television, Web, Movies, Games and Music.
After that we got all creative again and made up a front page for our portfolio, I myself used the south park creator again and made another character and finished it off with some creative and colourful symbols and squiggly lines.
Some of us then had to go and get our id cards so we could be identified (obviously) and even had my photo taken which is a rarity in itself. (hate cameras.)
Gillian then introduced us to Illustrator for a time and then came round with a camera of her own, and took pictures of us individually. (Twice in one day aaggghhhh!!!!!)
During the break I had a go on a flip camera, Gillian told me how to switch it on and away I went. Unfortunately I had actually forgot to press record so I never recorded anything :(.
And then to finish, Gillian showed us a video diary that Fee had done, which was awesome and really well done. If only I had a webcam, never mind.

My First Day At College

FIRST DAY AT COLLEGE - 24th August 2009
Had a really fun and action packed first day. Started off with numeracy, to be honest was completely dreading it as i'm not over keen on maths, but surprising didn't go to badly, met our tutor Steve, and he gave out booklets for us to have a go at. I started off at intermediate level 1 section 1 "Read and use a straightforward scale", which I finished and so started on section 2 "Interpret straightforward graphical information".
After numeracy, we then had Hardware and systems, which was basically the tutor finding out how much we knew about computers. What we found out was that some knew more then others, but at the end of the days thats the reason we are at college, to learn things we don't know or to broaden our minds a bit more to what we do.
We then had Creative Digital Media with Gillian (Tutor) telling us the overview of the course and that we will be looking at the creative process and the industry (what type of jobs there are in digital media), as well as doing projects and learning about hardware and software, so we can gain the 4 credits for our course.

After that we had a discussion on how much we used the internet for social networking, gaming etc, and the information we found out was the following:

  1. Most people in the class spent in excess of 1 hour per day on web and most 2-3 hours. Some in excess of 6 hours.

  2. YouTube was mentioned, but also MSN, Games, Music, Iplayer, Facebook and Bebo Social Networking in general.

To continue on with the discussion we talked about what sort of jobs we were looking at doing when we have finished the course(s) and the answers varied from animator, game developer and photographer to video creators, editors and digital artists.

We then turned to the computers and opened up accounts on you tube, voicethread, googlemail, photobucket and started to be creative and did a south park character of ourselves (which you can see above).
